kindergarten bound

Long day at work. Got home and had to go right to Somer's "end of the year open house", or so I thought. Remembered I needed to bring a dessert, so stopped at Meijer's on my way where we grabbed some cupcakes that tasted like chemicals. Arrived at school at 6:10, ten minutes after the "start" of the open house. To my surprise, little preschool students were arranged in a row, taking turns walking up to the front to receive their diplomas while announcing what they wanted to be when they grew up. Just as Joe accepted his diploma and yelled "batman" into the microphone, all eyes seemed to turn to me while I looked down at my daughter who had on an old Christmas dress, flip flops, and star wars sunglasses. Apparently, this wasn't just an open house, but an actual preschool graduation, with grandparents and dressed up moms and dads, not to mention, their preschoolers. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Part of me wanted to cry and tell them all that I used to be a stay-at-home mom - a really good one -who was at every halloween party in full costume and blowing whistles on field day. But I didn't. I smiled as the class all seemed to yell in unison, "SOMER!" And then I laughed, and started snapping pictures. Somer was not only oblivious, but seemed to be feeling very cool, very proud in her dollar store shades, never taking them off, even to receive her diploma. Later, we ate lukewarm pizza and bagged salad with bulk ranch dressing. And then Sydney said, "No one's eating our cupcakes, Mom."

And I laughed some more.

What a great story! I had to giggle at the Star Wars glasses...that's classic!

She's a beautiful girl!

I grew up vacationing in Michigan and went to Meijer's sooooo many times. What a fun memory to have!

And I bet Somer said, or at least thought..."I want to be...just like my mommy!" Great story. Bad cupcakes...I think I have had them before--and they do taste like chemicals.

I was laughing so hard last night..kept pulling that pic up on my phone. She has a smirk smile on her face like, "I'm the coolest one here and you all just wish you had my glasses." So, you learned to fight your battles with the glasses...and I would too, but I still don't think I could let them win with the payless spiderman sandals. Just couldn't sink that low.

Sometimes all you can do is laugh and then escape into your own little world in your head.

I wished I would have learned that sooner. :-)

Oh...Carin!! That is so funny. Every Mom has been in that situation once...or twice...or three times. Love it!!

The glasses are ADORABLE. Man, she is a cutie.

Maybe it is because I have been there. Maybe it is because I know Somer doesn't fret over such things. Maybe it is the sunglasses...but when I opened that blog last night, I almost peed with laughter! Thank you for being confident enough to be vulnerable and willing to tell the stories that erode our facade of perfection. You are perfectly real. Love, dad

omg...I so needed to laugh tonight...seriously...who cares if she was in a christmas dress and star wars glasses...or that it was evidently a very high end affair...she will remember that you were there and brought nasty cupcakes that she prolly thought were beautiful...and you let her be her own person! VALUE IN THAT!

...also, just as an aside, you DO NOT ever have to make excuses to other parents about "I used to be a stay home mom!" NEVER! In your heart you still are, and you ARE still the same mom...you just don't get to sleep on the couch as much!

Reliving your post again, I realized that this is your charm...some people's posts are "boasts" where they reveal the best of themselves, the perfect moments of their lives, the slices of success where they just glow. You share those too, but you are also willing to take us to the laundry room, the cluttered cupboards of life and the awkward stumbles we all make. Thank you.
(Now that sounds alot like, "God gave us you, so we could feel better about ourselves...LOL!"
