a tribute

I was saddened today when I learned a good friend of our family, Eric Terhune, was just killed in Afghanistan. For the first time, the war is personal for me. Because of brave men and women like Eric, our children can be safe. For any who'd like to thank his family for his service to our country, you can sign his guest book here.

For every family who lives in fear of a knock on the door and news that will steal their son or daughter from their hearts forever, my heart sends love and gratitude and my spirit sends prayer and comfort. The war comes nearer when one of those names on the news is one you have spoken. Little Eric, who I held in my arms as a little toddler and who played with my son when their little worlds were simple and happy...they didn't know about war...I wish they never did. Thank you, Eric...for our life of liberty. May peace be yours.

Maybe I don't understand blogs...maybe I am just sadly sensitive. It seems you can hang a bag on a hook and get lots of comments, but post a photograph of someone who sacrificed his life...volunteering for high risk assignments so soldiers with wives and children could have a better chance of going home to their families, and no one cares to comment. I seriously just don't get it...I love the venue of the blog--a living diary chronicling our tears and triumphs--but is seems the lighter subjects prompt the dialogue. It is in the crucible that life is refined and distilled.

My heart goes out to Eric's family and friends. I am eternally grateful for Eric, even though I never met him...because today I was able to play with my son in the safety of this small town in the US..we must never forget the sacrifices that are being made every minute for that freedom.
