a valentine.

I got a valentine.
possibly my best ever.
and, the timing, impeccable...I had just jumped on instagram to see all these sweet moms posting pictures of their valentine's breakfasts in festive dishes.  I was just kind of hoping my kids ate breakfast period.

Dear Mommy,

Happy Valentines Day! I wanted to let you know that you are the best mommy ever! I remember when we were little and you used to get up early and make us red milk, and heart shaped toast with frosting on it. I don't know what you're doing tonight, but I will make you dinner when we get home from dad's. But if you already have plans, that's okay, and you can take a rain check. Anyway, I wanted to let you know how good of a mom you've been to my sisters and I in the past years where you and Dad aren't married. You've shown us how to love in ways that I can't type into words. Sydney can be bitchy and grumpy, so can Somer and I, but we know what it feels like to be loved. When you were saving to get Christmas presents, you were eating oatmeal for every meal. You've shown us love through sacrifice, and us girls are eternally grateful. Even though you don't have a boyfriend, girlfriend, and aren't married, don't think that you don't have anybody to celebrate today with. I love you so much! And sorry for not fully cleaning the kitchen last night.

Love you lots!

Nan

(I don't think I really ate oatmeal every meal, btw)

more later, including an answer to a reader's question and a rather eventful Valentine's evening.

Not only so great to have her feel that way, but that she is able to tell you, and took the time to tell you. You are rockin' this mom thing.

A Precious Valentine, indeed!

I feel that as long as we have love in our hearts and lives we can celebrate Valentine all the time :)))

I'm gonna need some tips on how to raise a thoughtful, kind, loving daughter - pre teen years and all. She sounds so sweet.

CJ - You are amazing. At first, I would say that I randomly found your blog, but now I know that things are put before us with purpose! My professional life as a special ed teacher was passionate and fulfilling, but my personal life was a shambles. I stayed in a marriage for 30 years because I believed that was what I was supposed to do. Everyone bloomed under my care, as I slowly shriveled. Five years ago, I had the conviction and courage to leave my marriage - for myself, and for my daughter (hoping to be a better role model). It has been an awesome, inspiring, and scary (a major medical issue) journey since then. I am 56 years old, but feel like I am going through the same emotional journey as you. Keep writing and sharing! You encourage me to know that it's ok to examine and express my own thoughts (LOL-I never, ever responded to a blog, for example). By the way, your daughters are amazing, too.

my favorite line..."everyone bloomed under my care, as I slowly shriveled."
