The Broad.

photographs of locals - part of an exhibit called The Gift. each photo will be rotated out weekly or so.
I, too, participated. they ask for a straight face - no smiling. It took all I had not to laugh hard. when
the exhibit ends, random photographs will be sent to participants, no one receiving their
own, which I think is really cool.

I was feeling matronly and then for whatever reason, decided maybe
I was ok.

A few weeks ago, the Eli and Edythe Broad Contemporary Art Museum
opened less than a mile from me.  Opening day was unseasonably
warm, so I threw just a scarf around my neck, donned my headphones,
and walked down to campus.  Director, Michael Rush expects our
Broad to be a "major player in the international art world", adding that
it could be anywhere in the world, and it happens to be in East Lansing.
A highlight for me was a collection of pieces, including
a few by Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol, that is part of a larger
exhibit called, In Search of Time, showcasing our impossible
urge to express time. My favorite was a large boat-shaped
sculpture made from three tons of Vietnamese sea salt bound with
water.  "The sculpture is intended to dematerialize while it is on view.
As the water evaporates, the salt begins to crumble and dissolve,
its disappearing form symbolizing the way that events in history may
slip away from memory or exist only as fragmented forms in our minds.
As Nguyen observes, 'It’s very exciting to me that the salt is
melting during the exhibition; this makes the work continuous
and perhaps never truly finished. The landscape is slowly
transforming all the time.”

I loved the floating one. Seems like a very cool event, wish it would come here.

My husband is an artist he has an opening reception on Friday. He only started painting a few years ago. I think it is funny how women get all giddy when talking to "the artist".

I loved the floating one, too. Also the pic of the builting with the windows...I used to drive on an elevated expressway & always loved looking in the windows of the apartment buildings at night. It always amazed me that most of the windows were wide open & everyone was just doing their thing, oblivious to the traffic right outside their windows.
Very cool place. The matronly comment cracked me up.

My family ended up not coming up that weekend, so I never did get over there to check it out. I am much more motivated to climb down from the Liliputian couch and get to campus!
