shine.

For any fellow Anne of Green Gables fans out there, a quote from Diana Barry in honor of the first day of school:

"Gilbert Blythe told Charlie being smart was better than being good looking."

I agree, even though I risked a potential hair fiasco by attempting to bleach and tone my own roots two hours before my cousin's wedding that was an hour away. Clearly not smart.  Clearly vain. Clearly Gilbert Blythe would have passed up my fake blonde braids for another's.

Sometimes it's hard to be smart.  Especially when it seems others like you better when you play dumb.  Sometimes your being smart might rock the boat, especially if you've played dumb for a long time in order to maintain peace and keep everyone happy.

But playing dumb doesn't serve the world. There is nothing noble about shrinking so that other people feel better about themselves. We are all meant to shine, just like children.*

So, shine.  There's room for us all.  To smart!

Sometimes I catch my girls doing that with their friends. I can tell. I don't let it pass - I corner them and stick it to 'em. :-) Shine!

Bottoms up to that! For the record though, in honour of Diana Barry I'm now tempted to go find a home Toni perm kit and do just my bangs. Smart? No. But I'd shine like a bad bitch.
