speaking of socks...

Somer needs some new ones. Sometime last week, I found her bagging up what appeared to be her whole sock drawer. Apparently, she was making "sock puppets" for all the kids in her class. She was so pleased with her project, there was no way I could be upset. So, I helped her address each bag, and we passed them out to her class later that morning. (notice the high school musical sleep mask on her forehead that she's been sleeping in by night, and wearing as a headband by day)

barefoot

sixty hundred

According to Somer, there are sixty hundred people in the world.
If you ask her how far away Florida is, her reply is the same, "Sixty hundred."
When I commented on our mass amount of polly pockets, again it was, "I know...I bet there's sixty hundred of them."
The other day when I told her I loved her, she said, "You know how much I love you, Mom?" I replied, "How much?" She smiled and said, "Sixty hundred."

new year's eve

I rang in the new year with three beautiful, apron clad girls as we baked homemade chocolate chip cookies, toasted our sparkling cherry spumante filled glasses, lit sparklers, and watched the ball drop. I am thankful.

meerkats...

in the flesh! I accompanied Sydney and the third graders on theirBig Zoo Lesson...I was cold. Miserably cold. The docents clearly LIVE for this stuff. He was mesmorized by these animals and others I've never heard of...completely oblivious to the snot running down his nose. Meanwhile, I was cold. Miserably cold. Although I must admit, the meerkats really were pretty cool. The things we do for our children...

birthday celebration, take two

6:30 in the morning...preparing her birthday treat for school. Apparently, the arrival of the fifth birthday also means the arrival of the fake smile. You should have seen the finished product...an absolute obscene amount of sprinkles. The crunch was delish.

road trip

Around 5:30 this morning, Sydney left for her second official road trip with Grandpa Tim. When I checked in on them twelve hours later, they were singing songs, playing the alphabet game and getting ready to eat pizza, Sydney's choice. She'll never forget this.

and just like that...

...she finished her lunch and took a nap. There were no commands. There was no prompting. Just a tired little girl in search of her bed.

The Herdmans

I started reading "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" last night to the girls. They were smitten at page one, their little eyes growing large as I compellingly described the naughty acts of Imogene, Claude and Ollie. Then, to my delight, I found them this morning committing the most wonderful of naughty childhood acts...they were sneaking a peek, too impatient to wait until bedtime to know more of these misfit lives...greedily devouring the words of the story.

There is a garden in every childhood, an enchanted place where colors are brighter, the air softer, and the morning more fragrant than ever again." Elizabeth Lawrence

The funny dance guys

The funny dance guys have overtaken our apartment. I find them every-where, along with the tiny paper clippings that accompany them. They're all similar in appearance...open mouth, feet moving in the same direction, arms to their sides, and according to Somer, dancing the funny dance. Not far from these funny dance guys, it would not be uncommon to stumble upon a yellow sticky note, with her signature, resembling the one I found tonight on the brown chair. One also might find these autographed post-its on a cupboard, a drawer, in the fridge, or perhaps on the toilet. Ahhh...the signs of childhood.
